July 12, 2012

The next day we headed off to see Mt. Rushmore.
We took a ranger guided tour and learned a little bit about how this beautiful mountainside came about.

Collin enjoyed completing the Junior Ranger program and earned his junior ranger badge.
I love just how seriously the rangers take this program.

After Mt. Rushmore Lyla was exhausted so we took a little drive so she could nap.  We ended up in Deadwood where we stopped for some lunch and some ice cream.  The kids got the biggest cones ever and enjoyed every bit of it.

July 11, 2012

Way back when...we took a family vacation to South Dakota!  Our original plans of heading to Seattle, visiting family, and living it up in the city changed abruptly when the flights to Seattle were full.  So to South Dakota we went.  And it was a blast.

Our fist adventure was to Bear Country USA.
We saw all kinds of animals up close in the comfort and safety of our own car.  The kids thought it was great and loved moving around the car to get a better look out of each others windows.  After driving through the park, we were able to stop, get out and look at the baby bears.  They were very playful and put on a good show.  I thought they were so cute and couldn't get enough of the little guys climbing the trees.  The kids of course had a blast looking in the gift shop and spending their money.  Seriously, I think the only requirement they have for a good vacation is souvenirs!!

July 21, 2012

We had our annual neighborhood picnic and parade to celebrate pioneer day.  The kids look forward to this day all year.  They have so much fun decorating their bikes, riding in the parade, and playing at the park with great friends.  With cotton candy, a fish pond, face painting, a giant slip and slide, and a candy cannon who wouldn't have fun!!

a good book

I couldn't help but smile watching her settle down to read a new book she just downloaded on her nook.  She is so into Dork Diaries these days.

Lyla, Month X

I have been slow at posting this ... Lyla is already 11 months old.  But I had to record her 10 month letter.  Hopefully soon I will have 11 months done.  Time is flying by too quickly.  Before I know it, she will be a year.

To My Lyla:

Oh baby girl!  At 10 months you are so full of spunk, and personality.  You know what you want and just how to get it.  You are sweet and stubborn.  And we love you to pieces.

You never stop moving.  Ever.  You will want to be held and then proceed to climb all over the person holding you.  You have mastered the art of real crawling now and are pulling up to anything and everything.  I just know that all too soon you will be standing on your own and taking a few steps.

You have started waving and it is pretty much the cutest thing I have ever seen.  You wave at random people we see and even at yourself in the mirror.  So cute!  You are talking up a storm, but haven't said any real words yet.  At times you can be quite loud and will burst out with a string of sounds like you have something important to say... and I'm sure you do!

It has been quite the month for sleeping.  We had to lower your crib mattress and you scream every time we lay you down.  I have had to show you some tough love and let you cry it out on more than a few occasions.  I think teething is part of your problem (you are getting your top two front teeth in) but  whatever it is, I hope it ends soon.  It's a good thing that your cute !!!

You haven't been much of a sleeper this month, but you have become quite the eater.  You are loving your baby food, working on some finger foods, and gobbling up those bottles of yours.  I am already getting sad thinking about you not taking a bottle anymore.  I treasure the time I get to hold you in my arms while you suck away and play with my hair.

Speaking of hair.  You love to pull it!!  You are pulling hair any chance you get.  Poor Ruby is on high alert any time she is close to you.  She knows you have a plan to get her hair.  And you are usually successful coming out with a whole fistful.  Thank goodness she handles it well most of the time!!!  It's funny because you have always pulled hair.  When you were just a tiny baby I would lay you on the floor and all of a sudden you would start screaming because you were pulling your own hair.  Such a silly girl!

We love you Lyla.  We feel so blessed to have you as part of our family.  Happy 10 months little bug.

Love always and forever,
Your Momma

Mad Scientist Party :: Collin's 6th Birthday

With Collin's LOVE of science, it only made sense to have a
Mad Scientist Party!!
and party we did!

Collin had a blast experimenting and creating messes with a few of his good friends.
I have never seen so much energy as these boys had.
They were craaazy!

Thanks to Steve Spangler Science and Pinterest, this party was a success!!

the party invitations were a free download from Living Locorto

Collin LOVED these test tubes...he has plans for many more experiments with them in the future!!

Experiment #1
Make Snow
Just by adding water we made fluffy artificial snow in seconds
So cool!

Experiment #2
Soda Pop Geyser
Collin thought this was awesome!!
With the Geyser Tube it was super easy and worked great.
I couldn't believe how high it went!

A week or so after his party Logan was asking Collin if he had ever seen a geyer before.
Collin responded "yes Daddy! and you have too! in our front yard!"
I thought that was pretty cute.

Experiment #4
Blow Up a Balloon
Using a water bottle, some vinegar, and baking soda we were able to blow up balloons
I think this was one of my favorite experiments.

Experiment #5
Worms
Using the inta-worm kit the boys made worms.
They had a blast with the the wet slippery little guys.

Next we took a break and opened presents
Collin was spoiled with so many great presents.
I love the way his cute little friends all huddled around him to see what he got.

Experiment #6
Decorate a Cupcake
I had the kids all decorate their own cupcake.
They got to choose their frosting and what ever candy they wanted to top it with
It was a hit!!

 Experiment #7
Color Mixing
I think this was the biggest hit among the boys...
they asked to do it over and over again.
Such a cool effect with just a little milk, food coloring, a q-tip, and some dish soap
Fun, Fun!!

After that I was worn out!!
But it was worth it to see this boys smile!
Happy 6th Birthday Collin!

For Collin

Dear Collin,

I can't believe that you are six years old.  Where has the time gone.  I spent most of your birthday teasing you that you were turning three because really... how can you be six already!  You assured me though that you indeed were six.  So far you are loving being a year older.

Collin at six years old you love learning.  Especially science.  You love anything about volcanoes, space, dinosaurs, and exploration.  At night during story time we settle down to read and you always choose a non fiction book full of many fact and interesting tidbits that you delight in.

You finished up your Kindergarten year and are looking forward to being a first grader in a class full of your favorite friends.  School has come easy to you this past year and it makes me so happy to see you coming out of your shell.  You are particularly interested in math and telling time right now.

You have become quite the bike rider and have developed a new hobby with your Dad.  Together you and him race BMX bikes and you love it.  You have won several trophies and look forward to the nights when you get to race with your Dad.  I am glad that you get to share this love with him.

You have become all boy and want very little to do with the girly things your sisters play.  You want to run and jump and ride your bike and be loud.  You rarely sit still, but when you do Legos are your activity of choice.  You can put together any set that is placed before you with little to no help.  You love to stay busy and are constantly looking for things to do.  The words "I'm bored" come out of your mouth almost every day.

You are such a sweet boy with a kind heart.  We love you.  Happy sixth birthday bud!!
Love always and forever,
Your Mommy

the simple things

This weeks simple thing:
POPSICLES!!
The kids like to cool off each evening with a popsicle.
Usually Lyla is content to share
but on this night...she wanted her own!
I think she enjoyed it! {GRIN}

the simple things

This weeks simple thing:
The girls were so happy to be home after being away for a few days.
It always makes me smile to see my kids playing together...or by each other!
It was a happy reunion with each other + their toys!!

July 4, 2012

Our 4th of July was a little different this year.  Sophie was lucky enough to go see the Beach Boys at Stadium of Fire with her Grandma and 2 of her cousins.  She spent 3 days in Provo playing and having a blast.  Collin and Ruby spent the holiday with my parents shopping and gathering candy at the parade!  They had a lot of fun too!  Logan was working over the holiday, so Lyla and I hopped on his flight and flew to Monterey for the day.

The hotel we stayed in was super nice and it was just a short walk away from downtown.  We tried to make it to the parade, but we just missed it.  We walked to Fisherman's Wharf and then headed to a local park where there was live music and food booths.

After hanging out downtown, we decided that we all needed a nap and headed back to to the hotel.  We slept a bit and then had dinner.  We went to bed early that night in preparation for an early flight the next morning.  It was a lot of fun hanging out with Logan.  I love the times like these that we get to spend together.

a month in photos...June 2012

I can't believe it is July already.  The year is half over! The days, weeks, and months are flying by.  I realized when putting my month in photos together just how much of a slacker I have been at taking out my camera and capturing the everyday.  In fact, I didn't take one picture of Ruby the entire month of June!!  I'll have to be better because it is so much fun to look back and see all that we have done!

During the month of
June 2012...

Sophie and Collin had their last day of school
we visited the splash pad for some cooling off
we played at home...Lyla like to play under the table!
Sophie started horseback riding lessons
Sophie had her ballet recital
and we played with the slip and slide

Welcome July!!
The month of birthdays, parades, vacations, and fun!!
